Why hybrid cars are better for the environment
— It’s a car that makes you feel good.
It’s an SUV that can take a lot of abuse.
It has a battery pack that can last more than a week.
It can carry a lot more.
And, for a while, it was pretty good for you.
That’s the hybrid car.
But the next step is a car designed to take more abuse, and that’s a new generation of electric cars called hybrids.
The first one, the Toyota Prius, was unveiled this month at the Detroit Auto Show.
But this one?
Not so much.
“The Prius is great,” said Jim Hightower, Toyota’s president of global sales and marketing.
“It’s great for a long time.
But now it’s just not going to be around.”

The Priuses Prius was a plug-in hybrid.
The engine, however, was electric.
The battery was an all-electric battery pack.
In a nutshell, that means it can go about a day without charging.
It also has a regenerative braking system that regenerates its energy in the event of a crash, which saves fuel.
That is important because the Prius’s battery life can vary greatly depending on how much energy the battery has to recover.
In other words, if you want to get more mileage out of the battery, you might have to run the battery for longer periods of time.
“We’re building the Priuses to take on more than one charge,” said Scott Dombrowski, Toyota vice president of vehicle electrification.
That means the battery pack can charge in the evening and charge during the day, when it’s cooler.
“When you’re running a battery, if there’s a storm or a bad event, it’s a lot harder to charge,” Dombrowksi said.
Toyota has built its Prius hybrid in three factories in South Korea and China.
“I think that is where they’re going to end up being the leaders of the industry,” Hightowers said.
“There’s a big battery plant in South China, but we’ve got to be able to get a production line in Japan to get the Priuss on the road there.
We want to be there by the end of this year.”
But Toyota is also making its electric Prius a bit more difficult to make.
The company has said it wants to make it much easier to build.
“You don’t have to make everything in the United States anymore,” Hightsower said.
That may be true, but Toyota is not making it easy.
“One of the things we’re looking at is making it easier to find a factory that can build a Prius and then get it to market,” Houstower said, adding that they are also considering making it cheaper to build a car than they are to buy it.
“In the last couple of years, we’ve started looking at the economics of building a Priuss in the U.S.,” Hightows said.
They are also working on the new Prius with a battery that has a lifetime of about 30,000 miles.
That sounds good.
But Toyota will need to do some work on the battery.
“To make it the same length as a Priuses battery, the battery needs to be much thinner, because that’s what you want in a battery,” Dabrowski said.
If Toyota’s battery packs are not designed to hold more than 30,0000 miles, the Priis Hybrid may not last as long.
That will mean a lot longer battery life for the battery as well.
Toyota said the battery packs that the company will be building for the Priuse will also be made with the same design, with the exception of the regenerative brake system, which will be made out of lithium-ion.
“Our batteries are made to withstand the high temperatures and pressures that a Prizex will face,” said Jens von Scheele, Toyota Motors’ chief engineer of battery technology.
“That’s why we have the regenerated braking system.
It will help the battery last longer.”
If that’s true, the regeneration braking system could be a boon for electric cars, but not for hybrid cars.
“This hybrid is designed for the future, and the future of electric vehicles is about much more than plug-ins,” Hiestowers said, pointing to the electric vehicle market.
“Toyota is building a hybrid that will make a lot less sense for the long term.”
That’s why Toyota is building it with the battery technology that was developed for the hybrid cars that were built decades ago.
“What we have here is a battery technology designed for electric vehicles that will be ready for a hybrid car in 2023,” von Scheel said.
